The heat of the sun
beams down on her back.
Mountains surround her.
The air is cold and crisp.
The days have been cloudy and rainy
up until this moment.
She is so afraid
that a cloud will come
between her and the sun
and take her warmth away
that she doesn’t realize
that there are blue skies
for miles
behind the mountains
that she cannot see.
Her thoughts occupy the possibility of more coldness
that she doesn’t enjoy the warmth of the sun
that is being gifted to her at the moment.
And the birds chirping.
The condors flying.
The absence of wind.
The comfort of the jacket
How the clouds cast shadows on the mountains.
The silence of the forest
creating a moment
just for her
of quietness
of presence
that she tries so hard to find.
