Home.
I get it now.
I get why people love their homes so much.
As young kids, we don’t often get to choose our homes.
We don’t get to chose a lot of things in life, really.
My childhood self was just living, and going, and doing whatever seemed “best” for me.
I never asked myself:
What place would make me feel at home
if I got to choose?
What thoughts would make me feel at home?
What smells, colors, people, pets, views, neighbors, town, state, country,
would make me feel at home?
When you finally start asking yourself those questions,
and build a home, an apartment, or even just a room
with your things,
it makes you feel connected to the earth.
It gives us a physical place on this earth
that looks how we feel
on the inside.
That looks like who we are on the inside.
Instead of working so hard to stay connected to myself
in a chaotic, changing, and challenging world,
I can just go home,
and she can help bring me back.
Even if you still live in your same childhood bedroom,
your home should always be evolving and growing
along with you.
Hang up your degree,
put pictures in frames,
keep things just because they’re soft,
and get rid of things that don’t match the colors
of the home
you feel on the inside.
