Gardening Here, For Over There

Choosing to stay

and nurture the garden you are in now

and care for the trees and plants here

within your roots

so that they’ll be healthy and happy

for many years to come

is way braver

than jumping to a garden far away,

in a foreign land,

even if that garden appears to be more beautiful.

All gardens are different,

but they’re all the same, too.

We are all just one big garden,

each growing different kinds of fruits, veggies, flowers.

Gardening is long, patient, dedicated work,

but I hear the satisfaction of seeing a fresh strawberry form

on a vine you grew by yourself

is magical

and worth all the strawberries

you could buy in a market.

And soon your roots will be strong and healthy enough

to grow an infinite amount of fresh strawberries

and sour blueberries

to journey with you

hidden in your pockets

to wherever you go,

even to visit that beautiful garden, far, far away.

A soul can only be fed with fruit

that’s been grown by it’s keeper.
