Puzzling Without The Box

Remember that episode of New Girl when Winston was puzzling and didn’t know that each puzzle has the picture printed on the box?

He was just looking at all the mismatched puzzle pieces and trying to figure out what the final picture was as he went?

As wrong and hilarious as that was,

maybe Winston was on to something.

You see, we all are good on the inside.

All of life is beautiful at its core.

And if this is true, maybe the goal of life is to try to build our earthly world to match our beautiful, infinite inner world.

Maybe the goal is to cultivate a worldly life that is as pure as who we are on the inside.

But in our constantly changing earthly world, things often don’t align with the perfect beauty we all house on the inside,

and it can be extremely hard to build a life that matches it.

It’s hard to find jobs, things, people, and values that are just as beautiful.

Furthermore, we often don’t know what our inner worlds even exactly look like

or what that perfectly matched life looks like in the future.

We can’t see the picture on the box.

But, we have to try

and try

over and over again,

changing and changing our lives,

to slowly figure it out.

We have to take puzzle pieces from a big, mismatched pile

and try to fit them into our own ambiguous picture.

We can guess what some parts of our picture look like

as we find pieces that fit right together.

But we will never know what pieces we will find next.

Others peoples puzzle pieces won’t fit into ours.

Some people will even try to convince you to take the wrong pieces.

But even though we don’t know what our whole picture looks like,

we know when a puzzle piece fits.
